What therapy costs in Texas in 2026

American therapists set their own fees, and they vary so widely with discipline, seniority and setting that a single Texas number would mislead. What is published is worth more: the federal benchmark below, the fees Texas practices publish themselves, roughly $120 to $220 a session at the practices listing rates, and a state system of 39 local authorities with 24/7 referral lines that most fee guides never mention.

These are guiding estimates. Therapists set their own fees.

The one published reference point

Medicare, the federal payer, allows about $167 for a 60-minute psychotherapy session in 2026 and about $114 for 45 minutes, national amounts adjusted by locality. That is not what private practice charges, but it tells you what the government considers an hour of psychotherapy to be worth, and it is a fair benchmark to hold any quote against. If you have Medicare: Part B covers outpatient mental health, paying 80% of the allowed amount once the deductible is met; your 20% share of a 60-minute session is about $33. Since 1 January 2024, licensed marriage and family therapists and licensed mental health counselors can enrol in Medicare and bill independently, at 75% of the clinical psychologist rate, roughly $125 a session with your share around $25.

The state system: 39 local authorities

Texas runs public mental health care through local authorities, and the state's own wording is exact: the Health and Human Services Commission "contracts with 37 local mental health authorities (LMHAs) and two local behavioral health authorities (LBHAs) to deliver mental health services in communities across Texas", and each authority's referral line provides confidential help 24/7. The metro authorities by name: The Harris Center (Houston), North Texas Behavioral Health Authority (Dallas), Integral Care (Austin), The Center for Health Care Services (San Antonio), and MHMR of Tarrant County (Fort Worth). The referral line for your county is the place to start; the authority assesses eligibility and charges when you contact it.

What practices charge

Among Texas practices listing their prices: West Houston Counseling & Psychology publishes a per-clinician fee list running from $120 to $155 for associate-level counselors to $190 to $220 with senior licensed clinicians, with a psychologist at $200 for 60 minutes, and The Mind Parlor in Dallas states its own fees at $65 to $165 per 50 minutes. These are the practices' own published rates, read on 28 July 2026; they are examples, not a survey, and the working range they suggest is $120 to $220 for an individual session with a licensed clinician, with associate tiers from $65. Asking about sliding scales costs nothing.

Low-cost routes that publish their prices

Open Path Collective, a nonprofit network, states its terms on its own site: therapy at "$40-70 per session" after a one-time $65 membership fee, online or in person. University training clinics in the big Texas cities run supervised sessions at reduced fees on the same logic: you see a clinician in training, supervised by licensed staff, for a fraction of market rates.
