Therapy in Porto can cost anywhere from free public services to over €130 per session in private practice. This guide breaks down typical prices, cost differences across the city, and practical ways to find affordable support.

What therapy costs in Porto in 2026

Portugal ended moderator fees across almost all SNS services from 1 June 2022, so referred consultations, including mental health care, cost nothing at the point of use. The one charged door left is the emergency department without a prior SNS referral. Privately, practices that publish their rates charge about €40 to €70 a session, with supervised low-cost tiers from €35.

These are guiding estimates. Practitioners set their own fees.

What ended in 2022, and what remains

As reported when the government announced it, the June 2022 change removed moderator fees from health-centre consultations, scheduled hospital consultations, prescribed exams, surgeries and admissions. If you read a guide quoting a per-consultation taxa moderadora for therapy, it describes the system that ended then. What remains chargeable is narrow: attending an urgência without being referred by a health centre or the SNS 24 line, and not being admitted. What remains to manage is the referral: enter through your health centre or the SNS 24 line and the pathway is free.

The exemption machinery also still exists for that remaining case: economic-insufficiency exemption under Decree-Law 113/2011, requested through the SNS 24 portal, the SNS 24 line or your health centre, assessed by the tax authority and re-evaluated every year on 30 September.

The route in Porto

Your centro de saúde is the entry: the family doctor refers into psychology and psychiatry within the SNS, free at point. The honest caveat is the queue: SNS psychology capacity varies by region and waiting is the real cost, which is what moves people in Porto to the private market, where fees are set practice by practice and no Portuguese body publishes a schedule. The reliable private figure is the practice's own quote, like those below.

What practices charge

Among practices listing their prices: PsiMed, with clinics in Lisbon and Porto and an online service, publishes €35 and €50 tiers for 50-to-60-minute sessions, and Oficina de Psicologia publishes €60 as its standard rate, with €39 through its supervised institute and €70 to choose your clinician. The consumer organisation DECO PROTESTE's survey of psychology consultations found €50 to €70 the most common range, which corroborates the practice pages. These are the practices' own published rates, read on 28 July 2026; they are examples, not a survey, and the working range they suggest is €40 to €70 for individual therapy, with supervised low-cost tiers from €35. Asking about reduced rates costs nothing.

Reviewed July 2026. The current machinery was read on the SNS's own portal on 28 July 2026; the abolition's scope is labelled to the reporting of the government announcement. We quote no abolished taxa amounts. The private figures are the linked practices' own published rates, read the same date, shown as examples; the band is their working range, not an official price.
