What therapy costs in Christchurch in 2026

New Zealand's answer starts somewhere unusual: with three routes that cost nothing, one of which needs no referral, no claim and no wait, at the GP practice you are already enrolled with. Private fees exist and vary; Christchurch practices rarely publish them, and we are not publishing a Christchurch price list we cannot trace to sources that charge it. What is published is below.

These are guiding estimates. Therapists set their own fees.

The free routes first

Access and Choice, at your own GP practice

Health New Zealand's Access and Choice programme puts wellbeing support inside general practice: "Many GP clinics throughout Aotearoa now provide access to free wellbeing services through the Access and Choice programme." It is delivered by health improvement practitioners, health coaches and community support workers, and "the service is free for enrolled patients, with no referral necessary". Sessions are brief, generally up to 30 minutes, aimed at mild to moderate need, and the programme includes free kaupapa Māori, Pacific-led and youth services. It is the lowest-friction mental health door in the country: ask at your own practice's front desk.

ACC's Sensitive Claims Service

For anyone who has experienced sexual abuse or assault, ACC funds support at no cost, and it starts before your claim is assessed: "up to 14 hours of one-to-one therapy, 10 hours of social work, and up to 20 hours of whānau support before having their claim assessed for cover." That detail matters enormously if you assumed you would have to prove something first.

ACC counselling after physical injury

Mental health support connected to a physical injury can be funded under an accepted ACC claim, a route most people do not know exists.

What ACC actually pays, which calibrates everything

ACC's own published schedule (information sheet CTRIS02, effective 1 June 2024) pays approved counsellors $101.00 an hour including GST, and $128.82 an hour where a psychiatrist provides the service. We quote the schedule with its date deliberately: ACC revises these under the Cost of Treatment Regulations, so treat the figure as the published 2024 rate rather than necessarily today's, and check the current sheet if you are relying on it. As a reader, it gives you a fair benchmark for what an hour of counselling is worth when a public payer sets the rate.

If you are paying privately

Ask what the fee is and how long the session runs; whether a lower-fee or student-intern place exists; and whether online sessions are charged differently. Fees track the practitioner's profession and seniority: counsellors generally charge less than psychologists, and psychiatrists, as medical specialists, the most.
