How Much Does Therapy Cost in Al Ain in 2026?

The first question in the UAE is not which city you are in. It is which system you are in. Health insurance is mandatory for residents. Al Ain sits in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, where expatriate cover is employer-provided and UAE nationals are covered by Thiqa, the government scheme, which pays in full at government facilities such as Al Ain Hospital and part of the fee at private ones. Mental health cover under an employer policy varies, most private clinics do not bill insurers directly, and a doctor's referral is commonly required before a psychology claim is paid. Al Ain practices rarely publish fees, and we are not publishing an Al Ain price list we cannot trace to sources that charge it. For calibration, two Dubai practices that publish their schedules put a 50-minute session at AED 750 to AED 850.

The public route

The public route runs through the emirate's own system. Al Ain Hospital, part of SEHA, is the only facility in the city providing inpatient psychiatric and behavioural sciences services, and it runs child and adult psychiatry alongside them. It is an academic centre working with the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at United Arab Emirates University, which is also in Al Ain. The hospital is on Shakhboot Bin Sultan Street and its switchboard is 03 767 7444. Above it sits the emirate-wide Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre Mental Health Programme. Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital, often named in national guides, serves Dubai and the Northern Emirates rather than Al Ain.

Neither publishes a price list; we read their pages and say so rather than guess. What we can say is that Al Ain has a full public psychiatric service, that Thiqa pays for it in full for nationals, and that ringing to ask costs nothing.

Pay first, claim later

Most UAE mental health clinics operate on a pay-and-claim basis: you settle the full fee at the appointment and submit the invoice to your insurer yourself. Whether you recover anything depends on your policy, and many policies require a doctor's referral before psychology is reimbursed. Three questions settle it before you spend: does my policy cover psychology and counselling, or only psychiatry; is a referral required; and does the clinic bill my insurer directly or do I claim back?
