Conversations Around Mental Health In The Workplace In Nigeria Should Be Encouraged
In the Nigerian workplace, more employees deserve better access to adequate Mental Health Facilities that cater to their needs, thereby improving the quality of life for staff across various organizations within the Nigerian community.
Mental Health in the workplace has always been a pressing issue, and while most people do not like to discuss their personal Mental Health challenges at work, it is a conversation that needs more light shed on it.
Depression has been a leading cause of suicide in Nigeria and the workplace. There have been cases of employees taking their own lives due to their struggles in their personal lives that they may not want to share with people around them, making it very difficult to address the root cause of their struggles.
So there needs to be a proper audit of how employees are coping with their Mental Health in the workplace, as this would encourage open dialogue and conversations around issues that challenge the minds of individuals who are struggling with various life issues that they are afraid to talk about for fear of being judged or stigmatized in the workplace.
We need more Human Resource Managers to open the line of communication with their line managers, who can then encourage the staff of the organization to talk about the issues challenging their Mental Health, as this would ensure that proper conversations about their struggles can be adequately addressed on time.
Access to Therapists, Psychologists, and Employee Wellness Programs must be encouraged and provided as part of the Staff Compensation Packages, as this would ensure that the employees of the organization get the help and assistance they need on time.
Mental Health in the workplace is a conversation that should not be swept under the rug; it must be an open conversation that more employees of various organizations must talk about to ensure that the root cause of their struggles is addressed on time.
In the Nigerian community, most people feel scared to talk about issues about their Mental Health for fear of being judged or stigmatized, and this spills into the office environment, where more people suffer in silence without getting the help that they need.
To address this issue, there need to be more open conversations and safe spaces that encourage employees to open up about the issues that are bothering them, as this would help them cope better with their struggles and begin the process of open dialogues that address the root causes of the pain and struggles that they are going through.
Workplace Bullying and office politics are viewed as some of the leading causes of Mental Health struggles for employees who work in toxic office environments, and this has a direct impact on the Mental Health of employees in the workplace.
To address these issues, more training programs designed and tailored toward employee wellness must be encouraged, as this would help these individuals cope better with their Mental Health and thus open the line of communication between various teams who may be struggling with the same issues.
Thus, more open conversations and dialogue about Mental Health in the workplace must be encouraged, as this would help fight stigmatization and issues around talking openly about these challenges that seem to affect the productivity of workers who genuinely need all the help that they can get for an improved quality of life.
