Words of affirmation
Phrases like “I love you, You look lovely, Good job” clicks well with people having Words of Affirmation as their love language because they seek acknowledgement, recognition, and appreciation for themselves.
- Affirmation jar: Make small chits of phrases that are encouraging. Roll it up and store it in a jar. Feel self-validated by picking up a chit from the jar every so often.
- Mirror talk: Mirror talk can be as easy as you want. Just walk up to a mirror and give yourself at least five compliments. There can be a tendency to notice flaws initially. However, persistently giving five compliments to yourself out loud would start standing out. Using a full-length mirror is highly recommended. You can also refer to one of my other articles to get a beginner's guide to mirror work.
Receiving gifts
The main essence behind gifting is thoughtfulness rather than the price of it. So here are some pro tips:
- Understand self: Start by listing things you need v/s things you want. It will help you understand your requirements better and ward off the guilt of mindless shopping.
- Gift from time to time: You can create your own occasions that call for the need to receive gifts. Occasions like reaching a milestone, having a bad day, times when you did something good, and so on can be gift time.
Act of Service
If Act of Service is your love language, you like to feel supported from time to time. Whether big or small, you feel loved when you are served.
- Receive a service: How wonderful would it be to honour yourself with a service you wish to receive from others? It may include services like going to a spa, taking a therapy session, a taxi service, a cleaning service, and so on.
- Taking care: You can care for yourself by grooming, preparing healthy meals, going for a general physical checkup from time to time, and more based on what you resonate with the most.
Quality Time
Being entirely and wholly present in the moment means spending quality time. If your love language is Quality Time, you value the time put in by others for you.
-
Date with self: The concept of self-date is getting more popular daily. Choose the kind of date that would make you happy.
-
Routine: Build a morning and night routine for yourself where you can spend time focusing on yourself. You may choose from various activities like meditating, exercising, walking, indulging in self-pampering, and more. Choose an activity that you find worthwhile.
Physical Touch
If your love language is Physical Touch, it is the warmth and comfort you love when you are touched physically.
- Hug yourself: Either use a technique called butterfly hug or hug yourself the way you like every day to feel warm. You can also have a dedicated pillow, cushion, or plush toy to hug.
- Massage: Indulge yourself in regular massage therapies to feel loved by yourself. You can learn self-massage techniques, buy massage rollers or book an appointment at a massage parlour.
The above are just a few practical tips I have suggested based on my experience working as a counselling psychologist. The idea to use this approach came to me when one of my clients was struggling with their self-love journey and had previously tried many things. The beauty of this method is that you can be as creative as you want and try out new activities. Just remember to follow the essence of your love language. I would love to hear how effectively you found this information.
