Approach

How long should therapy last?

It depends on each person. Some are only with us a few months and others remain for years. We are always open to discussing when you are ready to stop or even if you just need a break. It is always 100% your choice and we will support it. There is no right timeline and we will work with you to fit with your life and needs.

What happens during a session?

Every session will include space for you to share and discuss current life with your therapist. There may be times when you focus more on the past or future, depending on both what you are comfortable with and what has been going on for you. Every therapist at Water & Stone also has specialties they may offer in the session. Whether you use them or not will be based on your comfort level, openness to trying something new, and conversation with your therapist about why something might be beneficial. These might include art, humor, movement, walking meditation, guided visualization, and more! No experience is necessary and you and your therapist will decide together what does and does not interest you.

When to seek help?

It's always okay to start therapy. Usually people come to therapy if they have had something recently happen in their life or they feel overwhelmed. Even if you don't know what the catalyst was, you can find a therapist when you are feeling overwhelmed, stressed, uncertain about life, or in need of support.

The benefit of a therapist is that they are both a trained/skilled professional and that they are there solely for you without any other connection to all that goes on in your life. You are their priority and they want to help you create the life you hope for, heal from pain and trauma, and build the confidence and trust you can have with yourself.
