Tasneem van de Biezen, MA

Counseling Psychologist

My work aims to help clients gain a better understanding of their presenting concerns but more importantly to gain a better understanding of themselves.

About Me

I have been a psychologist for over 15 years with experience in many areas including private and government hospitals, academic institutions and corporate consulting as well consulting and supervising at various NGOs in Johannesburg. In my private practice my work focuses on long-term psychotherapy aimed at helping individuals, couples and families navigate life’s challenges.

Approach

I am greatly influenced by the psychodynamic way of working – also known as ‘depth psychology’. This therapy focuses on the causes of problems and not just the presenting symptoms. Our unconscious mind is always at work making sense of experiences and can also have an influence on the way we see ourselves and perceive others. Therefore through weekly therapy sessions it becomes possible to gain insight into the unconscious motivations for our behaviour; and with a greater knowledge of one’s self we can discover different ways of thinking and being in our lives and relationships.

Basic Information

Services

My work has shown me the enormous value of self-insight and self-awareness and the positive impact that the development of these has in the various aspects of one's life. I offer therapy that aims to develop understanding of one's self so as to create deep and enduring changes in one's life; as more often than not, our behaviour, thoughts, and ways of relating, whilst well-intentioned, do not always lead to the desired outcome. The decision to enter therapy is courageous yet often difficult, and I aim to offer my clients a safe and supportive space so that they can allow for the time and patience needed to better understand themselves and their presenting concerns.
