Deciding to to come for mental health problems is usually a scary process for most people due to cultural backgrounds and the stigma surrounding mental health issues. To help alleviate any anxiety one might have before an appointment, I will try to explain what we do at the initial consultation.

When we see clients for the first time, we want to know more of what makes them tick what their everyday life is like and their background growing up. This includes understanding the families they come from and their interactions, as well as how this may have a bearing, if any at all, on the present symptoms. We also ask a lot of questions on the early schooling years and the succeses and challenges faced through out these years.

Sometimes we may ask you to bring a close, trusted friend or family member so that they help in creating the picture of who you are today in comparison to who you used to be.

All these questions help us to know the best way we can help you, as well as to understand what you want to get out or benefit from the sessions. The initial conduct also helps you to see what we have to offer, and it also helps us to establish a trusting therapeutic relationship.

A client may visit me twice a month for the first 3 months. Thereafter, they may come once every 6 months. However some may come less often , whilst others may come more often depending on how one is coping and the prevailing stressors they may be facing at certain points in their lives.

I have completed specialized training and hold a masters degree in Psychiatry, as well as a postgraduate diploma in Mental health studies. I am fully registered with the Medical and Dental Practitioners Council of Zimbabwe as well as with the Health Professions Authority of Zimbabwe.
