Mr Joonas Vehvilainen, MSc

Psychotherapist (Registered)

Are you feeling stuck in cycles of addiction, trauma, anxiety, or emotional pain? Whether you’re dealing with substance use, overwhelming stress, or past experiences that still affect your present, you don’t have to face it alone. I support younger adults (18-45) on their path toward lasting change and recovery. Using evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, and trauma-informed methods, I offer a safe, respectful space to work through what’s holding you back—and build toward a better future.

About Me

I am originally from Finland but have also lived in Thailand, USA and the UK where I currently reside. I have previously worked in various London-based jobs including being a healthcare assistant in a mental health unit and a support worker in supported accommodations from 2016 to 2019. Witnessing the struggles I saw in this work, it motivated me to study addiction psychology and counselling at London South Bank University (LSBU), while working part time as a counsellor for the NHS, Humankind and WDP from 2019 to 2021. These two years contributed to solidify my knowledge of counselling and how best to support clients suffering from the different aspects of addiction and mental health. As a result of completing this degree, I became certified as a member of British Association of Counselling Practitioners (BACP) and Addiction Professionals in 2021. I then became accredited by BACP in 2025. I have been working as a counsellor for over 5 years now. I have had my own practice since 2022 and have also done work for Castle Craig Hospital as an addictions therapist in that time. I currently focus on addiction, trauma and other complex mental health issues in Finnish and English using solution focused methods such as CBT.

Approach

My collaborative approach works on a similar basis to psychoeducation. This technique provides information related to the biology of the brain and the workings of the human mind. It is an evidence-based therapeutic intervention derived from studying psychology, neuroscience and their relation to addiction and mental health for over 10 years. My therapeutic approach aims to teach a combination of awareness and problem-solving toward the routines that might be negatively affecting day-to-day life. I am not only here to listen your issues, but I am also here to actively help you solve them.
