Mr David Schmid

Jungian Analyst

verified by TherapyRoute

As a Jungian Psychoanalyst my primary aim is to facilitate 'Individuation' - the coming into being of the unique individual. I approach each person with an attitude of openness, curiosity, and compassion, and a desire to understand their unique personality, life circumstances, and the obstacles blocking their path.

About Me

Hi, I'm David, a Zurich-trained Jungian Psychoanalyst (AGAP/IAAP). I am experienced in working from a depth-psychological orientation with individuals and couples. I offer sessions primarily online, but also in-person. I was born and raised in the small towns of British Columbia, Canada before later moving to Vancouver, B.C. to start my university education. A profound interest in human nature and a desire to help others led me to pursue studies in psychology, and then law. After practicing law for about ten years I was drawn back to psychology, and in 2004 I began training and working as a therapist. In 2009, I started training at the International School for Analytical Psychology (ISAP Zurich), and initiated my psychoanalytic practice in 2011 upon promotion to Diploma Candidate. I am now based primarily in Berlin, Germany.

Approach

My work is motivated by a desire to help individuals find authenticity, meaning, and a sense of inner peace. As well, I am inspired by the possibility of helping clients discover and develop their potential through contact with their deeper selves. I accompany clients through a process of exploration and self-discovery that examines past, present, and future, and helps them understand how their life experience has contributed to their current circumstances. Through insight into these dynamics, individuals may gain understanding and compassion for themselves, as well as greater freedom from past patterns of relating to themselves and others. To the extent that clients are freed from these blind spots and compulsions, they have more capacity to connect with their deepest nature, so that their lives can unfold in a way that brings a greater sense of fulfilment. I approach each person with an attitude of openness and curiosity, and a desire to understand their unique personality and life circumstances. I attempt to tailor my approach by taking into account where clients are in their development, and what works best for them. Sessions entail focused, reflective dialogue and with close listening, timely interpretation, and room for silence. We trace anxious thoughts, shifts in mood, and recurring relational patterns. In the process you will hopefully discover more fully who you are and develop in accordance with your deep authentic self. I work with dreams as a way to enter into dialogue with the unconscious. I also work a lot with 'active imagination' as a way to address and integrate our complexes ('triggers'). This is a technique that resembles both Internal Family Systems as well as shamanic journeying.
