Ms Amanda Kottler

Clinical Psychologist

I am a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and academic. I work online and in person, both in South Africa and internationally. Therapeutically, I work only with adults. I also offer individual and group supervision/cross-consultation to other psychotherapists.

About Me

I am a clinical psychologist based in Cape Town, South Africa, with over 30 years of experience. I have held a position as a senior lecturer at the University of Cape Town, but now work full-time in private practice as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist. I am a founding and faculty member of the Cape Town Psychoanalytic Self Psychology Group and a founding and Emeritus Council Member of the International Association for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology. My academic interests have evolved over time, but have always centered on the exploration and theoretical elaboration of “difference”. More recently, through creative writing, I have begun to explore and elaborate on the idea of “hidden selves” and the experience of being “itified.” I have presented and published on these topics in South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Approach

My therapeutic approach is relational, with Self Psychology and Intersubjectivity Theory as my primary clinical orientation. I believe in the significance of empathy as a way of, with my patients, making sense of how early caregiving relationships have shaped their sense of self and their emotional patterns of relating to others over time. I am particularly interested in how early experiences of being misunderstood, unsupported, or overlooked can shape the difficulties people repeat in adulthood. I see therapy as a collaborative process in which therapist and patient work together to make sense of a patient's emotional struggles as they arise. I try, in the process, to be as authentic, reflective, and as mindful as I can be of how my own experiences might enter and affect the therapeutic relationship. I use theory not to impose ideas and overshadow a patient’s lived experience but to support and deepen my understanding. My style is collaborative, respectful, and thoughtful, and my aim is to help patients develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their painful struggles in a way that feels safe, meaningful, and humane.
