This page lists Female Psychiatrists in Cape Town. 2 in all.
That is 2 of the 4 psychiatrists listed in Cape Town.
These are practitioners who identify as female on their profile 1. We ask every therapist that question, and they may decline to answer. We do not check it.
This list answers an explicit request for a woman.
A client and a practitioner always differ; what matters is what that means to you and how you work with it 2. You can filter the same list by the languages a practitioner works in.
What a psychiatrist trained in, and what they can prescribe
Everyone on this page is listed under the professional title psychiatrist. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who then specialised in mental health. Psychiatrists can prescribe medication.
Many also offer talking therapy. Psychiatrists tend to see people whose medical, psychological and social needs all come together.
Ask a practitioner's office what a first appointment covers. Ask what they need before you book.
What this page filters on
These are the only filters: the practitioner's stated Female identity and the professional title psychiatrist.
The Cape Town page answers more questions about therapy there.
Paying for therapy in Cape Town
Do affordable options exist in Cape Town?
Groote Schuur Hospital - Psychiatry Outpatient Services. Phone +27 21 404 9111. Western Cape public hospitals charge on a means-tested scale. Patients in the lowest band pay nothing for specialist outpatient visits. Public patients are accepted by referral from a district or secondary service. Each specialty has its own eligibility criteria.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral to see a psychiatrist?
Ask the practice whether you need a referral before booking. Many health systems require a doctor's referral; some do not. How the appointment is paid for can change what is needed.
What happens at a first appointment?
A psychiatrist asks about the problem that brought you. They may also ask about your life, your thoughts and feelings, and your physical health. You can ask about any diagnosis, how the psychiatrist has made sense of your situation, and what the care plan is.
Will I be put on medication?
Not automatically. Many psychiatrists also offer talking therapy.
Medication helps in some situations. For moderate and severe depression, a psychiatrist may combine therapy with antidepressant medicine3. Ask what the options are, and what happens if you would rather not take medication.
Psychiatrist or psychologist?
Psychologists focus on psychological treatments.
Where medication is likely, or the picture is complicated, a psychiatrist is the usual route. For talking therapy alone, either can be a starting point. Many people see both.
Who registers therapists in South Africa?
The title you will see is Psychiatrist. Search the register by name at Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Check that the name and title match and that the entry is current. If they do not, ask the practitioner why.
In South Africa psychologists and social workers must be registered to practise. No statute protects the plain title counsellor.
