What couples counselling works on, and what it does not decide
Couples counselling works with two people, and with what happens between them. It does not treat one of them.
Both partners usually attend 1. Couples counselling works on repeated arguments, an affair, sex, money, parenting, or a decision about separating.
It does not rule on who is right. It is not for married couples alone. Ask a practitioner which approach they use.
What psychotherapy works on, and how long it usually runs
Everyone on this page describes their work as psychotherapy. A psychotherapist works through talking with you about your thoughts, feelings and behaviours 2.
Psychotherapy usually runs longer than counselling and aims for clinical change. It works on patterns that repeat rather than on one current problem.
A psychotherapist trains in psychological treatment rather than in medicine. What that training covers, and which approach a practitioner uses, differ between practitioners. Ask which approach a psychotherapist trained in, and how long they usually work.
What this page filters on
These are the only filters: the specialism recorded as Couples and the professional title psychotherapist.
Paying for therapy in Singapore
Do affordable options exist in Singapore?
Shan You Counselling Centre. Phone +65 6741 9293. The centre publishes subsidised fees. A further subsidy, based on your means, is available for up to six sessions. People of any age in the community can ask for counselling. An assessment follows the request.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do both of us have to come?
Is this for married couples only?
No. Couples counselling is for people in a relationship, married or not, of any gender, living together or not. The same practitioners work with couples deciding whether to separate, and with couples who have already separated and are parenting together. Say which of those describes you at first contact.
Will the therapist say who is right?
No. The work is with what happens between two people rather than with a verdict on either of them. Effective work with couples needs its own theories and methods, drawn from research on relationships. Ask a practitioner how they handle it when you disagree in the room.
Can couples counselling be done online?
Yes, and many practitioners offer it. Couples therapy by video shows few significant differences from face-to-face sessions4. Symptom reduction, engagement and the therapeutic alliance are comparable.
Sitting in the same room at home suits some couples and not others. Ask what a practitioner offers.
What does marriage counselling cost in Singapore?
Fees here are set practice by practice. No national fee schedule covers private mental health care in Singapore, and no professional body publishes one5.
Four things move a fee. The practitioner's profession and training, their experience, the length of the session, and whether you are seen in a room or online.
TherapyRoute publishes a cost guide for Singapore. It sets out what the public psychiatric service charges and which schemes sit behind those charges. It carries no figure for couples work, and we will not print a range we have not measured.
Where a practitioner states a fee on their listing, that figure is their own. Ask before the first session. Ask too whether the fee runs per session or per person in the room.
What happens in a marriage counselling session?
Both partners usually attend together.
Practice differs on what comes first. Some approaches open with a formal assessment that combines joint and individual meetings. Others use no set assessment stage1.
No rule settles whether either partner is seen alone. The practitioner's method does.
Ask before you start whether they see each partner alone, and what they do with what one partner tells them in private. Ask how you will know the work is done.
When should we go for marriage counselling?
There is no threshold you have to cross first. Relationship distress is one of the commonest reasons adults seek psychotherapy at all6.
Neither of you has to have decided, and you do not have to agree on the problem before you make contact.
Two Singapore programmes carry the word counselling and are required rather than chosen. Parents of a child under twenty-one complete the Mandatory Co-Parenting Programme before filing for divorce7. A Muslim marriage requires the Syariah Court's Marriage Counselling Programme before an application is filed8. Neither is the work this page lists.
